We also have the honour to support our

complaint by copies of the correspondence which we have

sent to the Honourable Colonial Secretary in Hongkong.

While it is always our wish to work with,

instead of against the local Administration, we do feel

that, in an instance of this kind, some concession might

have been made and that the main point of preserving the

natural beauties of this Colony, should not be allowed to

act as any impediment or deterrent to the advancement of any

British industry. You will observe that we have stressed

in one of our letters that the mere fact of permission not

being granted in a matter of this kind, must surely, in effect,

even to a small extent aggravate the difficult question

confronting the Government at Home in regard to the

unemployment figures.

The whole matter really, to our

minda, is entirely a question of precedent. It is not our

desire to have these Signs erected indiscriminately throughout

this Colony, as we are equally as proud of this Island

as the Authorities are themselves, but since Hongkong is a

trading centre, we think it ought to be realised that support

should be extended to business houses, instead of difficulties

being placed in their way, to encourage anything which will

help to extend British trade Overseas.

The potential

business offering in these Signs, which are for advertisement

purposes, naturally emanates from purely Chinese territory, but it is generally recognised that Chinese buyers will very
